A Bair Hugger is a warming blanket used during and after total hip and knee replacement procedures which can cause serious infections in some patients due to a design defect.
The Bair Hugger provides warm air to surgical patients, to prevent and treat hypothermia. The device, which was approved by the FDA in 1998, consists of a warming unit and disposable blanket that distributes the warm air across the patient. Studies have shown that keeping a patient warm during and after surgery helps regulate their body temperature and prevents hypothermia, which results in less bleeding and faster recovery time.
Bair Hugger Side Effects
The most serious side effect, problem and risk caused by the use of the Bair Hugger blankets is deep joint infection, especially in the hip and knee during replacement surgeries. Treatment for these infections includes a combination of surgery and/or long-term antibiotics. In severe cases, amputation, joint fusion or removal, and a revision surgery may unfortunately be necessary.
